Two sources, one problem
Water spotting on cars around Miami-Dade almost always traces back to one of two things. The first is lawn sprinklers — irrigation systems on timers that run early morning and hit driveways, carports, or street-parked cars with hard, mineral-loaded water. The second is rain that dries directly on hot paint. Miami's pattern of intense afternoon storms followed by strong sun means a car can go from soaked to bone-dry in the same hour the surface is still radiating heat, which accelerates evaporation and concentrates whatever was dissolved in that rainwater right on the clear coat.

The three stages of spotting
Type I — surface deposits
Loose mineral residue sitting on top of the clear coat. This is the easiest stage to correct and often responds to the right chemical treatment without machine work.
Type II — bonded deposits
The minerals have started to bond to the surface. Stronger chemical treatment, sometimes paired with light polishing, is usually needed to fully lift them.
Type III — etching
The spot has actually etched a shallow depression into the clear coat. At this stage the spot isn't sitting on the paint anymore — it's part of the surface profile — and machine polishing is required to level the surrounding clear coat down to match.
Glass spotting is a separate issue
Windshields and side glass etch the same way paint does, and sprinkler overspray that hits the same spot on a windshield day after day is a common cause. Glass has no clear coat to level, so correction relies on dedicated glass polishing compounds rather than the paint process. We treat glass and paint spotting as separate steps during the same visit.
What determines whether a spot fully removes
- How long the deposit has been sitting before treatment.
- Whether it's mineral residue (Type I/II) or true etching (Type III).
- The condition and hardness of the existing clear coat.
Most spotting we see responds well to correction. Deep, long-standing etching on already-thin clear coat is the exception where full removal isn't realistic — we'll tell you honestly if that's the case rather than over-promising a result.
Preventing it going forward
If sprinklers are the cause, retiming or redirecting the irrigation head is the actual fix — no amount of detailing outruns a sprinkler hitting the same panel every morning. For rain, drying the car with a clean towel when it's practical, rather than letting it air-dry in the sun, cuts down on new spotting. A paint sealant or ceramic coating also helps, since beaded water sheets off the surface faster and leaves less residue behind as it evaporates.
