Why paint looks worse here

Strong overhead sun is unforgiving. The same defects that hide under an overcast sky show up clearly the moment a car is parked in the open in Miami — spiderweb swirls across the hood, cloudy reflections down the doors, and a chalky look on older single-stage or heavily weathered paint.

Years of UV exposure also thin and oxidise the clear coat, which is why a well-maintained car from a cooler climate often has noticeably crisper reflections than a same-age car that has spent its life parked outdoors here.

How correction works

Inspection and testing

The paint is washed and decontaminated, then examined under proper lighting. A test section establishes how the clear coat responds and what level of improvement is achievable before the whole car is committed to.

Compounding and polishing

Defects are levelled with the least aggressive combination of pad, product and machine that gets the job done, then refined so the surface is clear rather than merely filled. Clear coat is a finite resource; removing more than necessary is a poor trade.

Protection afterwards

Freshly corrected paint is bare and should be protected. That's usually where ceramic coating comes in, though a sealant is an option for shorter-term protection.

What correction won't fix

• Scratches you can catch a fingernail in — those are through the clear coat
• Chips, cracked clear coat or peeling paint, which need refinishing work
• Dents and body damage
• Deep etching from droppings or sap left on the paint for extended periods
